Give Thais A Helping Hand

Bangkok's landmark Grand Palace is seen flooded October 27, 2011. The floods are expected to take a toll on Thailand's tourism industry, which employs more than 2 million people and makes up 6 percent of GDP. -REUTERS/Bazuki Muhammad - 27 October, 2011

ST John Ambulance Malaysia’s (SJAM) Penang branch is initiating a project to assist disaster relief efforts for flood victims in Thailand.

SJAM state commander Datuk Dr Yee Thiam Sun said the project, named ‘Humanitarian Mission for Thailand’, was carried out in response to instructions given by the Prime Minister’s Department.

“We are ordered by the department to be the main coordinator in the northern region to gather resources from various NGOs and charity organisations here to help Thailand,” he said.

He said a centre would be set up at SJAM Penang headquarters on Grove Road to collect items that meet the immediate needs of flood victims.

Yee said items needed are first aid kits, survival kits, drinking water, life jackets, camping lamps, flashlights, mosquito repellent, mosquito nets, rowing boats, rafts, tents, rubber boots, effective microorganism (EM), water pumps, electricity generators, drinking water supply mobile units, drinking water tanks and mobile toilets.

“We need help from the public. They are welcome to bring the items to the collecting centre during office hours, which is from 9am to 5pm,” he told a press conference in George Town.

He added that SJAM would like to recruit volunteers for a trip to Bangkok for disaster relief and restoration works.

“We have yet to finalise the time to go there, it depends on the coordination with the Thai government,” he said.

Thai consul-general Voradet Viravakin, who was also at the press conference, said he appreciated SJAM’s offer to help Thailand battle the worst floods in 50 years.

For item contribution and volunteer recruitment, call SJAM Penang on 04-8285972 during office hours.

Donations can be deposited into SJAM’s savings account at Public Bank Berhad. The account number is 3170193000.

is Thailand ok?

The flood in Thailand is getting worse.

I pity them la. What can we do in Malaysia to help?

They are lack of food supply. Homes got swept away. Crime will increase. Students cant go to school. People can't go to work. They can't move around. They don't have clean water to drink. If the water level is too high, people can get gush away also you know.. Everything will be so problematic and chaotic.

I wonder if Thailand needs volunteer or first aider or not. I'm so willing to go there to lend my hand.

Buddha please bless Thailand and its people. Make sure they are safe. Materials broken or go missing can't be buy back but not lives.

Orang Asli Semai from Kampung Pos Dipang

Date: 21/11/2010

Time: 5.35pm

Venue: Kampung Pos Dipang, Kampar, Perak

Kampung Pos Dipang in Kampar, Perak was one of the first Orang Asli villages to be destroyed by a disaster in Malaysia. A mudslide due to a heavy rain gushed away the whole village on August 29 1996 about 6pm. The Orang Asli village was situated next to Sungai Dipang. A nearby Chinese village also got affected by the mudslide. The incident snatched away 44 lives but only 39 remains were found, the other 5 are still missing. The disaster is believed to be contributed by the logging activities nearby. True enough, when i went there, a huge area of the jungle were cleared. A lot of trees were chopped and ready to be transport out.

As i always say, development is good but not to the extent that it destroys us.

flash flood in Kampar

April 29 - Kampar is flooded again today for the second time in my 3 years of studies in UTAR Kampar. The first flood happened on April 10 but it's not as worse as today's flood.

The super heavy downpour started after 5pm and lasted for more than 1 hour with deafening thunders and discolight lightning. The scenario was like a war scene in Iraq. wooo scary right?!

Westlake Homes for UTAR students accomodation went blackout at 5.45pm and resumed only when the rain stopped at 7pm.

i wanted to go out to snap some shots but the rain was just too heavy. The water level rose so fast and the water poured into my house.

1 hour of heavy rain with loud thunders and disco lightning caused Kampar to be flooded. Places like Westlake, Harvard, New Town, Taman Tasik Selatan, and Taman Kampar Perdana are seriously affected. Some places were black out. More photos? Ask from UTAR students. =p
Places like Harvard, New Town, Taman Tasik Selatan, and Taman Kampar Perdana are seriously affected too. Now the biggest victims are the students where their vehicles could not start and their rooms are leaked thanks to the good construction by the profit-maker. The worst thing is UTAR students are having their finals now.

Not to forget, the shoplots in New Town also flooded. They are gona have bad time to clean the mess.

By the way, i'm really 'impressed' with Kampar. Satu kali hujan, satu Kampar tenggelam. walaueh.. the rain here so keng lo. In Penang, kalau hujan hor, at least oni few parts banjir. haha.

let us pray..

Today is 11th March 2011, 11311.

Today is a day we gona remember because tsunami striked again. Japan is highly affected with tsunami after a 8.9 richter scale of earthquake. I don't have to say much. Just open any news portal and you'll know how big is the impact. More and more people died with thousand of belongings destroyed.

well..

let's do what we can do.

While most of us here are still safe, able to online and be with friends and family, let us put our hands together, just take one minute to pray for the safety of our brothers and sisters who are facing disasters now.

Then i rushed to the scene to cover the news bergeda-geda with her for the first time. Im so happy ok. I learn a lot from her la. Not to lick her shoe but that's the truth. I take her advice seriously.

Give a clap to urself Kwan Yee.

The funny thing is i jote down the points using my handphone and she was looking for her note pad. wahahaha. That's why my camera, pen, and handphone are the only things that matter the most everytime i go out. =p
