Finally in The Star

This was from The Star today. Friday 28/10/2011.

After waiting and trying hard for months since June, i'm seeing my name in The Star Thumbnails again today.

Feel so touched and thankful.

Give Thais A Helping Hand

ST John Ambulance Malaysia’s (SJAM) Penang branch is initiating a project to assist disaster relief efforts for flood victims in Thailand.

SJAM state commander Datuk Dr Yee Thiam Sun said the project, named ‘Humanitarian Mission for Thailand’, was carried out in response to instructions given by the Prime Minister’s Department.

“We are ordered by the department to be the main coordinator in the northern region to gather resources from various NGOs and charity organisations here to help Thailand,” he said.

He said a centre would be set up at SJAM Penang headquarters on Grove Road to collect items that meet the immediate needs of flood victims.

Yee said items needed are first aid kits, survival kits, drinking water, life jackets, camping lamps, flashlights, mosquito repellent, mosquito nets, rowing boats, rafts, tents, rubber boots, effective microorganism (EM), water pumps, electricity generators, drinking water supply mobile units, drinking water tanks and mobile toilets.

“We need help from the public. They are welcome to bring the items to the collecting centre during office hours, which is from 9am to 5pm,” he told a press conference in George Town.

He added that SJAM would like to recruit volunteers for a trip to Bangkok for disaster relief and restoration works.

“We have yet to finalise the time to go there, it depends on the coordination with the Thai government,” he said.

Thai consul-general Voradet Viravakin, who was also at the press conference, said he appreciated SJAM’s offer to help Thailand battle the worst floods in 50 years.

For item contribution and volunteer recruitment, call SJAM Penang on 04-8285972 during office hours.

Donations can be deposited into SJAM’s savings account at Public Bank Berhad. The account number is 3170193000.

Survey to decide fate of infamous cobblestone road

Penangites, a good news for us. Finally the road is going to be tarred. Say thank you to the current state government by Lim Guan Eng. Only moron designers, architects and government can come up with the idea to put cobblestone on the road. Zzz.. They thought bapak dia olang mia jalan. Hotak letak kat lutut, maybe atas jalan kot. wahahah!

read the news from The Star below..

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

THE cobblestone road along Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling in George Town may soon be removed and replaced with conventional tar surface.

State Local Government and Traffic Management Committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow said the Penang Muncipal Council (MPPP) had received numerous complaints from road users on the cobblestone road since it was resurfaced in 2006.

He said the rough surface made driving uncomfortable while tyres wore out faster, especially for motorcycles and trishaws.

“It is also slippery when wet thus making it potentially dangerous,” he said, adding the council would conduct a week-long survey from now until Aug 23 to get the people’s feedback.

Chow said the input would be taken into account before any decision could be made.

He said work on the project, estimated at more than RM100,000, could start in about three months if it was approved.

Speaking to newsmen during a press conference on Monday, he said the cobblestones would be reused to cover the surface of a car park at the Penang Municipal Park.

“As for the concrete imprints, which also formed part of the road, they will be left untouched,” he said.

Survey forms will be distributed to residents and commercial operators along the road.

The public can also voice their opinion by calling Rohayu or Anne Loh from the council at 04-2592200 or email to mdrahizan@mppp.gov.my before Aug 23.

The survey form can also be filled online at the council website, www.mppp.gov.my.

Pensioner Lawrence Rajoo, 64, who was among the first to take part in the survey, said it was a good idea to replace the road surface.

“The rough surface of the cobblestones makes riding uncomfortable,” said Rajoo, who travels around on his motorcycle.

Shopkeeper Phoon Ah Hoe said the project would encourage more people, especially motorists, to come to the area.

“I have seen motorcyclists skidding and falling on the ground on rainy days when the road is slippery,” said the 64-year-old.

Pictures that tell a story

* An article about me was published in The Star yesterday. (Thursday 14/7/2011) hehehe. ok i'm not boasting ok. But good news like this, i should share around. After all, it's good for my portfolio and resume. =p

PHOTOGRAPHY buff Oh Chin Eng simply loved to take pictures of older people, portraying the simplicity of their life.
And one of his many shots titled “Home”, featuring an old Sikh man with a long beard, won him the third prize under the individual portrait category at the KL International Photo Award 2011 in April.

Prize Winner: Oh win third prize in an international photography contest with a picture portraying rich Sikh cultural elements.

Oh said he preferred to work with older folk as the subject of his photography.
“There’s a special bonding between me and them, especially when they smile for my camera.”
In the case of the old Sikh man, who was clad in a sarong, the picture captured was a production of assimilation in the plural society, said Oh.
He said he decided to document the Sikh community because they were lesser acknowledged in photography although they have a rich and diversified culture .
Up close: Oh taking an outdoor photo shoot at a park.

“Photographing them was a way to start a conversation and the shots recorded tell a story on its own,” he said.
Oh simply wanted his pictures of old people to be a medium of communication and to “convey a message of love.”
“I first bought the camera way back in 2000 to take part in a national-level photography competition organised by the Red Crescent Society,” he said.
He said winning the competition with the first merit prize had encouraged him to take up photography seriously.
Oh picked up photographyon his own.
“I observed how people composed their pictures to improve my skill,” he said.
Aside from actively taking pictures, Oh from Penang was also actively involved in non-governmental organisations such as Penang Heritage Trust, Anak-Anak Kota and rts-Ed.
“The participation in such organisations had widened my perspective in photography,” he said.
Oh strongly believes in unpretentious act, which was the essence in documenting people in his photography to reflect the stories behind each of his subjects.
“I would never ask people to pose for pictures. Being natural is definitely the best expression,” he said.
Early this year, he won the first prize of a photography competition organised by Kwong Wah Yit Poh. His photographs have also appeared in the The Star’s Thumbnail column since 2006.
On his future goals, Oh, a final year journalism undergraduate, plans to be a photojournalist.
“I hope my experiences and awards would help me land a job when I graduate,” he said.

got money, cannot bank in!

Aih..

Speechless la..

3 bad things just happened. But okla got 1 good thing. Hehe.

You see. I received a RM50 cheque from The Star in January and I forgot to bank in. I misplaced it. Yesterday I found it. So I went to CIMB bank to bank in the cheque. CANNOT!! Why? Because a cheque can only be bank in within six months. The cheque now is called DULL CHEQUE. Die lo.. I have to call The Star HQ in KL to request for a new one. If la they will issue me a new one.

Ok second story. I took photos for a painter and I got some pocket money from it. So I went to RHB Bank to bank in my money. Spent 5mins at the two Cash Deposit machines!! CANNOT! It says TRANSACTION REJECTION! Arrghhhh! Why?? After some checking, the banker said it’s because I didn’t touch my account for more than a year already. It has become DORMANT ACCOUNT. Arrrghh! You see la, now I have some pocket money, I wana save and bank in but CANNOT!

So fine. I have to activate it again. I gave my IC for verification. and guess what. The IC reader CANNOT READ my IC. The chip is SPOILED! Walaueh.. and I need to apply for a new IC in order to activate my account.

What is this la.. yennadei.. but hahah luckily something made it up for me. Ever since 2006 I have tracking and documenting old road name signs in PEnang. Riad name signs or street signs are part of the streetscape of a city. It’s part of heritage as well. I’ve found a lot of these. And as far as I know, no one ever document it before. So im kinda proud of it la. Hehehe. Anyway I was so shocked when I found a one today. And im more surprised because I never expect there is such kind of street sign and it’s still there today. The name on the sign is Prangin Road in the developed and modern KOMTAR enclave. This is history man.

Wohooo.

Situation Under COntrol, Says Hisham

HULU SELANGOR: Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein has confirmed that the number of churches attacked has reached seven but says the situation is not serious.

“So far the attacks have involved stone throwing and arson attempts. There is no serious damage,” said the Home Minister, referring to the latest report on the surveillance on places of worship.

Yesterday, the All Saints’ Church at Jalan Taming Sari and the SMK Convent along Jalan Convent in Taiping were targets of arson attempts. Hishammuddin said the incidents were isolated and not coordinated.

Hishammuddin, who is also an Umno vice-president, said the narrow-minded agenda pursued by certain quarters was aimed at creating chaos and inciting hatred towards Umno and the Govern-ment.

“Over the past two or three days, we are tested yet again when certain quarters have taken advantage to point fingers at Umno and the government by suggesting that we are behind the religious incitement. Such allegations are baseless. These people have nothing better to do but to point fingers at others.

“The situation is under control. We are monitoring the situation so that it will not become extreme and affect the peace and harmony we have built in the country all these while,” he said yesterday at Umno’s Juara Rakyat programme in Bukit Beruntong.

Both he and Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin called for maturity in dealing with the situation.

Khairy said Umno and Barisan Nasional leaders should lead by example so that people would understand that the Government under Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s leadership was doing its best to bring calm to the current situation.

“Don’t be trapped in emotions, don’t be trapped by finger-pointing politics to the extent that the situation becomes out of control,” he said after kicking off the futsal match at the same event.

“Of course, there are many discussions in blogs but what’s important is our actions.

“We must not fan the fire. We must put the fire out. We do what’s best for all.”

He was asked to comment on reports in blogs, including opposition blogs, blaming Umno and the Government over the religious incitement and church attacks.

“I would like to deny the statement blaming Umno and the Government because it is such an irresponsible statement when we have a track record of administrating the multi-racial country.”

Under control?? Haha! veli farnee! What is under control when more and more churches are being torched? Nak tipu budak 3 tahun ke?? Kalau cakap politikus boleh percaya, lembu pun boleh naik pokok. Please say something relevent Hishammooodin.
