true photographer

A true photographer always goes all out to get the best shot, even if the only camera he has spoiled. And most of the time, the images are more important than his own life. Even if he’s facing bullets, tear gas, water cannon, wild animals, fire, or ocean.

Hats off to these photographers.

my holiao camera

Well, what i can say is, don’t you look down on my capalang manual-focus DSLR with satay stick as the button together with a plaster on it.

Don’t play play, holiao till khisiao. Only the pro knows how to handle such a complicated machine ok.

It may be not as expensive as yours or not like the grand brand you are talking about. Who cares! I still take marvelous shots that touch the hearts. Can you?

My camera masuk hutan, masuk gua, masuk laut, masuk kubur, masuk segala tempat yang boleh masuk, tangkap segala benda yang boleh ditangkap and it’s still standing!

It's the best camera ever! wahaha!

OCE, the wedding photographer?

If people ask me to take wedding photograph, yes I would love to do it because I can earn at least few hundred ringgit a day. If the wedding couple is nice enough and they know the market price, they might pay me up to a thousand ringgit or more. I prefer wedding day photography than pre-wedding. But I don’t really like this type of photography. Why so?

-          I don’t have good gadjets.
-          I don’t like and I feel uncomfortable to ask people to pose for photos.
-          I don’t like to edit photos.
-          It’s tiring.
-          People especially friends can take you for granted and give you a very small amount of angpau.
-          Money is never my priority in photography. I do it for passion and satisfaction.

All these reasons will make me turn down the offer.

Anyhow whenever friends ask me to take photograph for whatever occasion, I always agree to do that. No money? No problem! It’s simple, it’s because of friendship.

Whenever I pick up my camera, I am sincere and serious in taking pictures. I do my best to deliver the photos needed.

*maybe I’m late to deliver the photos. That’s my weakness. =p*

hard to make a living

aih.. mau cari makan memang susah.

if you don't work hard, you'll earn less.

Money will never fall from the sky.

some people enjoy first and work later.

for others, they work hard and enjoy later.

so which one do you prefer?

which one do you think is safer and more secure?

me??

i want money and i want to enjoy life. Both can work at the same time.

ok i'll work hard in my wedding photoshoot tomorrow. =p

watermarks?!!!

grrrhhh... I am so damn pissed off when people steal photos without acknowledging the photographer.

The least they can do is inform the photographer.

But no, they take, they use and they get the credits.

Stupid isn't it!

I like what Lilian said:

"And dun farking suggest to me to watermark my photos because people like us don't do such childish work. Only tarak standard people will grab pics from internet and use it for their commercial purpose without giving credit. People like these are like thieves. Or maybe warlords who think we minions are your slaves with cameras running around. Mind you, that camera is half mine, ok? It is my own personal lens."

what the Total Lunar Eclipse..

What the moon!

What the total lunar eclipse.

I see almost nothing.

Aih..

I was raining whole night here in Kampar.

People here are not that lucky.

The moon has been hiding behind the clouds.

Once a while it came out but not clear.

But ok la.. I can see the orange color.

I tried to snap some shots but it’s hard though due to the clouds and my unstable tripod.

I remember last year, about this time, there were shooting stars.

And the UTAR students, like today, flocking the road, looking up the sky..

But there are people who are not bothered about it. Yea what’s the fuss about it anyway??

No more moon tonight! Go back to study or sleep and see the sun tomorrow la.

These are the photos i took just now from my balcony.

No cropping. No editing.

ORIGINAL!

*i'm surprised that i am posting all these photos although it's not nice. This time really cacat la. Usually i don't do that.*

I Am A Lonely Photographer

It’s raining so heavily here in Kampar. It’s flooded again. And again, I went out to snap some photos.

And I was alone..again.

When I went backpack, my friend said I'm a lonely photographer.

Well, she is right.

Now I get what she meant. I bet many people who saw me on the street have the thought also.

I never follow a photography trip before. Neither do I go for a photography outing.

I don’t feel comfortable.

But I will purposely go out to snap something that I feel is meaningful. For example if a building is going to be demolished. Or if the sky is beautiful.

It's ok la.. I enjoy what I'm doing and i don't need a bunch of photographers to make me good.

Whenever people see me, they will see my camera too.

Hmmm..

I don’t know why I’m suddenly so down. Maybe because I saw some outing photos from my friends in Facebook. It’s ok.. I am not jealous at all.

It just makes me realized many things. I’ll just keep those thoughts in myself.

I thank God for giving me good eyes to see. Sometimes my eyes see something that the other people don’t see and that’s what makes my photos special. I’m thankful for having a heart that cares and I express it through images. I’m glad I’m always alert with my surrounding too.

I don’t have the intention to praise myself but I always share my experience with my friends. I am so much happy everytime I see their happy face. The satisfaction of getting a good shot is extraordinary.

As I’m writing this, it’s raining cats and dogs outside.

Becareful on the road.

If you are a lonely photographer like me too, don’t be sad. It’s an enjoyable thing to snap pictures with all the freedom you need. Whatever you do, you just need to enjoy it and you will do it well.

I am happy being a lonely photographer.

I..

I am not an artistic photographer. I am just a realistic documenter. You may not like what I snap. But it is all the truth. My photos tell stories.

hai FYP

Langsir ditutup rapi
Cahaya terik dilitupi
Bilik jadi gelap gelita
Kipas berpusing laju
Bagai diserang histeria
Sedap untuk tidur mati

Jam berdetik
Tiada tanda akan berhenti

Masa menyusur
Hati resah
Nafas sesak
Kerja berlambak

Tapi malas menguasai diri
Ku jadi pemarah dan moody
Bukan kehendak menjadi begini
Tapi ku lemah di sanubari

Penat mencari motivasi
Di mana kau inspirasi
Hilang kau diterminasi
Mana pergi..

Aku perlu berhenti berkasih
Berhenti berpacaran dengan teknologi
Diramas idea materialistik
Dan sepastik
Kembali ke dunia hakiki
Balik ke jalan
Menuju ke FYP

Biar yang pergi berlalu pergi
Usah diungkit kembali
Sedangkan pokok boleh bercambah lagi

Fotografi kau blah dari sini
Akan ku ceraikan mu
Kau menghancur konsentrasi ku
Takpe, kita masih boleh bermadu
Perkara lain-lain, letak ke tepi
FYP jadi prioriti

Bangunlah kau
Bangun

Akan ku bangun dari kerusi
FB kau berambus dari sini
Biar cahaya masuk ke mari
Biar kejahatan berlalu pergi
Biar otak bersih berseri
Biar ku setia pada mu FYP

Mai aku siapkan kau FYP
Officially starts malam ini
Susah akan ku harungi
Kalau tidak
Tiadalah graduasi

good photographs..

Good photographs are not from the camera but the heart. Kecantikan foto bukan datangnya daripada kamera tetapi hati.

wow-ed by sister

There’s a photograph competition by The Star on Starwalk Penang 2011.

The theme is ‘Happy Starwalk Moments @ Heritage Spots”.

One participant can also submit two photos.

So I asked my sister to help me choose the shortlisted photos.

After a while, we can’t decide which is the best.

She asked me who chose the photo that I won the first prize at the beginning of the year.

It was me.

Confident and errogantly she said:

“You must trust yourself.”

I said ok ok and she just left.

It’s a words of encouragement, support, and inspiration.

I never thought to hear that from her, moreover at her young age.

She wants me to think by myself. She knows I can do it. She knows I can take good pictures.

Thanks Oh Poh Sim. =p

having my own name card

Finally, I've decided to have my own name card.

Well, i have to be confident in what i'm good at right.

I wanted to print it few years back but where got money la.. And i have no friends to help me design.

But now, some wonderful people are helping me. Wei Vern is designing the card for me. Eh she's very good in that. Lydia is sponsoring me for the name card. How nice are they. Thank you..

Name card is so important if i wana make some money from photography. I need to promote myself. I need to make people aware of my existence.

I know name card is not enough.. One step at one time la. After this, maybe i'll come up with my own domain and put watermark on my photos. see la how..

If you guys have any suggestion on the design, colours, contents etc, let me know k. thank you.

Panorama of Jalan Sultan, Kuala Lumpur

Do you guys know that some century-old shophouses in Kuala Lumpur will be demolished? Slowly Kuala Lumpur will turn into a full concrete jungle.

I feel sad actually.

I went to Jalan Sultan today and to explore the place.

Pictures that tell a story

* An article about me was published in The Star yesterday. (Thursday 14/7/2011) hehehe. ok i'm not boasting ok. But good news like this, i should share around. After all, it's good for my portfolio and resume. =p

PHOTOGRAPHY buff Oh Chin Eng simply loved to take pictures of older people, portraying the simplicity of their life.
And one of his many shots titled “Home”, featuring an old Sikh man with a long beard, won him the third prize under the individual portrait category at the KL International Photo Award 2011 in April.

Prize Winner: Oh win third prize in an international photography contest with a picture portraying rich Sikh cultural elements.

Oh said he preferred to work with older folk as the subject of his photography.
“There’s a special bonding between me and them, especially when they smile for my camera.”
In the case of the old Sikh man, who was clad in a sarong, the picture captured was a production of assimilation in the plural society, said Oh.
He said he decided to document the Sikh community because they were lesser acknowledged in photography although they have a rich and diversified culture .
Up close: Oh taking an outdoor photo shoot at a park.

“Photographing them was a way to start a conversation and the shots recorded tell a story on its own,” he said.
Oh simply wanted his pictures of old people to be a medium of communication and to “convey a message of love.”
“I first bought the camera way back in 2000 to take part in a national-level photography competition organised by the Red Crescent Society,” he said.
He said winning the competition with the first merit prize had encouraged him to take up photography seriously.
Oh picked up photographyon his own.
“I observed how people composed their pictures to improve my skill,” he said.
Aside from actively taking pictures, Oh from Penang was also actively involved in non-governmental organisations such as Penang Heritage Trust, Anak-Anak Kota and rts-Ed.
“The participation in such organisations had widened my perspective in photography,” he said.
Oh strongly believes in unpretentious act, which was the essence in documenting people in his photography to reflect the stories behind each of his subjects.
“I would never ask people to pose for pictures. Being natural is definitely the best expression,” he said.
Early this year, he won the first prize of a photography competition organised by Kwong Wah Yit Poh. His photographs have also appeared in the The Star’s Thumbnail column since 2006.
On his future goals, Oh, a final year journalism undergraduate, plans to be a photojournalist.
“I hope my experiences and awards would help me land a job when I graduate,” he said.
